Carambolim Lake is a large wetland near Old Goa, one of the best birdwatching spots in the state. The lake lies beside the Konkan railway line and is surrounded by fields and village land. In winter it attracts large numbers of migratory birds, alongside resident species. Birders come to see purple swamphens, jacanas, lesser whistling ducks, herons, egrets, storks and many kinds of waders. The lake's surface is covered in water lilies and aquatic plants that provide food and cover. The best time to visit is early morning between November and February. There are few facilities, which keeps it peaceful. It is worth the trip for birders and photographers who want an easy-to-reach wetland near Panaji.
