Corjuem Fort
Aldona, India

Corjuem Fort is one of the few inland forts in Goa, standing on Corjuem island in the Mapusa River in Bardez taluka. The Portuguese built it in the early 18th century to defend their newly acquired territory against the Bhonsles of Sawantwadi and the Marathas. It is compact and well preserved, with thick laterite walls, bastions and a small chapel within. The fort is linked to the story of Ursula e Lancastre, a Portuguese woman who is said to have disguised herself as a man and served as a soldier, with Corjuem associated with her service. Visitors reach it by road and a bridge, and the surrounding countryside of paddy fields and river backwaters is quiet and green. It sees far fewer visitors than coastal forts, so it is peaceful to explore. The ramparts offer views over the river and villages. It is worth the trip for an atmospheric fort away from the beach crowds.
