Morjim Beach
Morjim, India

Morjim Beach stretches along the northern bank of the Chapora River estuary in Pernem taluka and is one of the most important turtle nesting sites in Goa. Endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles come ashore here to lay their eggs, mainly between November and March, and the Forest Department protects marked nesting zones on the sand. Because of this, parts of the beach are kept free of loud music and heavy development. Morjim gained the nickname Little Russia because of the large number of Russian visitors and Russian-run businesses that settled here. The beach is long and flat, with good views south across the river mouth to Chapora Fort. Kite surfing and other water sports are offered in season thanks to steady breezes. Birdwatchers also visit the estuary for waders and gulls. Morjim is worth a visit for its blend of conservation, open space and a distinctive international scene.
