Reis Magos Fort sits on the north bank of the Mandovi River at Verem, facing Panaji across the water. The Portuguese built it in 1551 to defend the river entrance, and it was later strengthened and rebuilt. Over the centuries it served as a fortress, a residence for viceroys arriving in Goa and later as a prison. After years of neglect, it was restored through a conservation project led by the Helen Hamlyn Trust with INTACH, and reopened to the public as a cultural centre. Inside, exhibits and galleries cover the fort's history and Goa's heritage, including a display of cartoons by Mario Miranda. The ramparts give fine views of the Mandovi, Panaji and the river traffic. Just below stands the Reis Magos Church, built in the 1550s and dedicated to the Three Magi. It is worth the trip as a well-restored fort with a museum and one of the best river views in Goa.
