Shri Mahalasa Narayani Temple at Mardol in Ponda taluka is dedicated to Mahalasa, regarded as the female form of Vishnu as Mohini. The deity was originally worshipped at Verna in Salcete and was moved to Mardol in the 16th century to escape Portuguese religious policies. The temple is one of the most revered in Goa and is the family deity of many Konkani families. It is known for its large brass lamp pillar standing before the temple, an unusual feature among Goan temples. The temple's interior has finely carved woodwork and silver-plated doors. Festivals here, especially the annual zatra and Navratri, draw large crowds. The temple sits along the route that links several of Ponda's major temples. It is worth the trip for its religious significance and craftsmanship.
